Sources and Sinks of Interannual Steric Sea Level Variability

چکیده

Understanding the mechanisms of regional steric sea level variability is fundamental to understand recorded by satellite altimetry for years and insure that future projections made climate models are realistic. Here, we first develop a novel method based on variance budget allows detect sources sinks variability. Using “Estimating Circulation Climate Ocean” (ECCO V4) state estimate, then show interannual mainly sustained fluctuating winds via Ekman transport almost everywhere. The damping both net heat flux from atmosphere, largely dominates atmospheric freshwater fluxes, parametrized effect eddies. It also found diffusion weak in most regions that, although globally weak, fluctuations fluxes source close Equator Pacific Ocean.

Interannual variability of air-sea O2 fluxes and the determination of CO2 sinks using atmospheric O2/N2

[1] Motivated by the use of atmospheric O2/N2 to determine CO2 sinks under the assumption of negligible interannual variability in air-sea O2 fluxes, we examine interannual fluctuations of the global air-sea flux of O2 during the period 1980 – 1998 using a global ocean circulation and biogeochemistry model along with an atmospheric transport model. It is found that both the El Niño/Southern Osc...

Forcing Mechanisms of Sea Level Interannual Variability in the Bay of Bengal

A nonlinear, 41⁄2-layer reduced-gravity ocean model with active thermodynamics and mixed layer physics is used to investigate the causes of sea level interannual variability in the Bay of Bengal, which may contribute to flooding and cholera outbreaks in Bangladesh. Forcing by NCEP–NCAR reanalysis fields from 1958 to 1998 yields realistic solutions in the Indian Ocean basin north of 298S. Contro...

Interannual Variability in Global Mean Sea Level Estimated from the CESM Large and Last Millennium Ensembles

To better understand global mean sea level (GMSL) as an indicator of climate variability and change, contributions to its interannual variation are quantified in the Community Earth System Model (CESM) Large Ensemble and Last Millennium Ensemble. Consistent with expectations, the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is found to exert a strong influence due to variability in rainfall over land (P...

Climate impact on interannual variability of Weddell Sea Bottom Water

[1] Bottom water formed in the Weddell Sea plays a significant role in ventilating the global abyssal ocean, forming a central component of the global overturning circulation. To place Weddell Sea Bottom Water in the context of larger scale climate fluctuations, we analyze the temporal variability of an 8‐year (April 1999 through January 2007) time series of bottom water temperature relative to...

Interannual Variability in Weddell Sea Ice from Ers Wind Scatterometer

ERS-1/2 SAR and Wind Scatterometer data are analyzed together with DMSP SSM/I microwave radiometer data to investigate interannual variability in Weddell Sea ice and summer melt signatures during the period 1992-1997. Simultaneous SAR and Scatterometer images were obtained during a February 1995 cruise of the H.M.S. Endurance and aerial photographs collected for validation of the satellite obse...
